I may have missed it by a day, but this is worth putting on the calendar for next year! PARK(ing) Day is a one-day event where people collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.
People who set up these PARK(ing) spaces pay the meter for the duration of their stay and abide by all parking laws. In the case of one group in San Francisco, a traffic cop asked them to move after their two hour parking limit expired. A dozen people helped them move their hanging garden PARK(ing) space to another location where they fed the meter for another two hour stay!
New York City has actually been doing a great job making streets more bike and pedestrian friendly. Some examples include the redesign of the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue at Madison Square, the creation of Broadway Boulevard between 42nd and 34th Streets, the incredibly successful Summer Streets pilot program and NYC’s aggressive pursuit of new bike lanes.
PARK(ing) day is a great way to show support for the City’s efforts and to remind everyone that the streets are a public multi-use resource that should be shared by all!
